The Stories in Chronological Order

By Tony Eley

I have gathered together all of the stories in one place in chronological order, to make life easier for anyone who wants to read them from start to finish.

The stories start with a collection of reminiscences of my father Captain George Frederic Eley RE from the time of his call up on 23 December 1939 until his departure from the army on the ninth of May 1946

My Father's War Stories

My lifelong attachment to the Royal Air Force began whilst I was at school - I was fortunate to obtain not only gliding qualifications but was also awarded a flying scholarship - l flew solo after just six and a half hours instruction on 11 August 1964

Learning to Fly

One month later I began my medical training at St Bartholomews' Hospital in London but my love affair with the Air Force continued and I was awarded a Medical Cadetship in the Royal Air Force and was commissioned Pilot Officer on 13 August 1966.  My first posting was to Royal Air Force Leconfield as Junior Medical Officer, the duties included flying in helicopters with B Flight 202 Squadron RAF when medical assistance was required

After 18 months at Leconfield we moved to Royal Air Force Bruggen - three very happy years at the sharp end of the Air Force before returning to Leconfield

Missed Opportunities

I left the Royal Air Force in 1975, although I remained on the Royal Air Force Reserve of Officers until 1978.  From 1975 to 1995 I was a General Medical Practitioner in Derby

On 14  June 1985 I was commissioned as a Squadron Leader in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and became a Flight Commander on No 4626 ( County of Wiltshire) Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron.  I was appointed Commanding Officer of the Squadron in summer 1990 in the rank of Wing Commander.

Second Royal Embarrassment

Following the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein -  I, and all the members of the Squadron,  were formally
"called up " on 23 Dec 1990 ( 51 years to the day after my father's callup ) and embodied into the Royal Air Force in early January 1991.  The Squadron was deployed to four locations in Saudi Arabia from mid January to mid March 1991

Third Royal Embarrassment

I was appointed an Officer of the British Empire in the New Years Honours  List in 1993.  In the Autumn of 1993 I suffered my first myocardial infarction - a second occurred in autumn 1994 followed by a coronary artery bypass operation and I retired from both the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and medical practice in 1995

Retirement has allowed more travel, time to improve my computing skills - and more time to write and design web pages!
